One of the favorite booths at the Gluten Free Allergen Free Expo was the Amore di Mona chocolate sampling. So many dairy free people popping a Caramela in their mouth, without fear, and getting this look of utter delight on their face. It was heartwarming, and it helps that the chocolate is incredible, too. Since I didn’t want to make an utter slob of myself and eat all the chocolate, Chef Meagan Jeanette sent me some flavors from her headquarters in Kentucky to try and review at home. The lowdown on the ingredients is this:
-Gluten and Wheat Free
-Peanut and Tree Nut Free
-Fair Trade, Organic, RAW Madhava Agave Nectar (Sucrose Free)
-Fair Trade, Organic Dutch Cocoa Butter
-Artificial Coloring and Preservative Free
I don’t think it could get any better than that!
The Coffee Caramela contains organic, fair trade Le Semeuse coffee beans from Switzerland that give a delightful, mild crunch to the center before filling your mouth with a rich espresso flavor. There’s no hint of bitterness whatsoever, and what a great load of antioxidants! Definitely a good excuse to eat another!
The original Caramela is a beautiful, tender vegan caramel enrobed in silky dark chocolate that just melts in your mouth. There is no equal.
The Caramela with Cherries comes wrapped in like a gold brick, because it is truly worth its weight in gold. The flavor of the dried cherries and organic vanilla bean throw all your bad memories of cherry flavored cough syrup out the window. It honestly tastes like a high quality wine, the flavor is so well-developed. This is not a chocolate to binge on, but to “sip” and savor.
The original Dark Chocolate, while being the icing on the cake for the Caramelas, can hold its own with smooth, melt in your mouth texture and rich flavor. I can just see myself melting a bit and dipping fresh strawberries…
The Chocolate with Crunchy Coffee Beans is a very grown-up chocolate, with the same Swiss coffee beans that grace the Coffee Caramela, only now it’s a pure chocolate-coffee experience. Not the candy bars you grew up with, for sure, and so much better for you! The energy hit from the caffeine is never a bad thing, either!
The remaining flavors that I have yet to try are:
Caramela with Cranberries and Dark Chocolate with Currants. I’m sure they follow the theme of all the rest, though. Delicious. All are available at DundeeCandy.com., PeanutFreePlanet.com, Amazon.com, and at Whole Foods Markets.
I’d like to share some chocolate with you, but you’ve gotta help me out first.
