Elisabeth Hasselbeck: a name synonymous with class, elegance, and fitness. But did you know she’s a NY Times Bestselling author of TWO books about living Gluten Free? After years of struggling with intestinal discomfort, being on the show Survivor and living off the land made the pain go away! Reintroducing “normal” foods helped her figure out what was causing the digestive problems; gluten. She has since become an advocate for those of us living with gluten issues. The result? NoGii; a complete line of protein bars for the whole family. I discovered them at the GFAF Expo in Chicago in April, and was given a bunch to try. Here’s what I think about them!
The Super Protein Bars– HUGE bars, marketed for guys like her husband, pro athlete Tim Hasselbeck, in manly black and metallic packaging with flavors like Rocky Road and Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel Crisp. With 30 grams of protein, these aren’t something to shake a stick at. Milk allergies, beware. These do contain dairy. The Chocolate PB Caramel one has a sweet chocolate outside with a crunchy, peanut and caramel flavored inside. The typical “protein bar” taste is very mild and easy to ignore. Rocky Road tastes a bit like a s’more. Definitely my favorite of the two, but still very sweet. It feels more like dessert than a protein bar. I even had a buddy of mine try it and he went around telling all his friends about “these bars where you can’t even TASTE that they have protein! It’s like a candy bar!”.
The High Protein Bars– more normal-sized, marketed for the ladies in attractive white and pastel metallic wrappers. The flavor lineup of this 20 grams of protein, more granola-bar type is Cocoa Brownie, Mint Chocolate, Chocolate Coconut, and PB & Chocolate. Again, these have dairy, so beware if you’re allergic. Cocoa Brownie is pretty much that; chocolatey and crunchy, but not overly sweet. Mint Chocolate doesn’t have an overpoweringly minty flavor; it’s mild and nice. Chocolate Coconut has a great coconut flavor with very sweet chocolate, so it’s great if you’re looking for a candy bar fix. PB & Chocolate is a mild, crunchy peanut butter flavor dipped in milk chocolate. No nasty protein flavor.
Protein D’Lites– The flavor I’ve got is Chocolate Caramel Bliss, and these teeny little bars, while containing dairy, are like a perfectly sized candy bar indulgence, with 8 grams of protein. It’s a great purse-sized snack.
My two absolute favorite products that are also DAIRY FREE are the:
A3 bars– sized and marketed toward teens and tweens, these small bars are decorated with surfers and other athletes with a graffiti-esque label in flavors like Peanut Butter & Jelly. They’re very tasty and a great snack for me since they’re both gluten and dairy free (at least this particular flavor is), and I’m still just a kid at heart.
Paleo bars– I’ve got the Nuts About Berries bar (well, really, I’ve got the wrapper. The bar is long gone…so good!) It’s Paleo Diet compliant, no preservatives, no gluten, and no dairy.
